"To initiate, manage and administer military veterans' affairs with dignity and compassion. This will be through overall co-ordination and facilitation of the activities of all of Government and Private sectors to ensure the provision of coherent assistance to military veterans."

The initiative of establishing the Department of Military Veterans forms part of government’s commitment to support and recognize Military Veterans for their contribution to bring about the realisation of a peacefull, democratic and prosperous South Africa.

The Department of Military Veterans is to initiate, manage and all Military Veterans affairs through overall coordination and facilitation of all activities of government and the private sector.

The Department falls under the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans as a standalone department operating with its own budget.
